The Knocker-Up

Oh, yes, Victorians DID have clocks and watches! Read this! ... but many people couldn't afford them. To find more about the history of clocks, try looking at the "Revolution in Timekeeping" pages on this site.
(By the way, when I was researching this page, I was surprised by how few really good sites about clock history I found. If you know any more truly useful ones, please e-mail me via my contact page, and I'll think about adding more links!

The Knocker up seems to have been mainly employed by the company whose workers he or she was supposed to awaken. Sometimes they also seem to have been freelance - people would pay them directly. I'm often asked how the Knocker-up woke up... I know of some who had an official company clock or watch. I suppose others had to either buy one or use the church clock! Again, I'd welcome extra information.
