ELIZABETH YORK, HARPER/HARPIST

Harper AND harpist?
- historical and celtic harps are played by harpers. Concert harps are played by harpists.
So now you know. (And if you already did, you can justifiably enjoy that smug feeling!)

Liz pic Elizabeth York plays harps of various sizes: mainly her favourite celtic harp, in gorgeous warm walnut, with a rich and dancing tone to match, but also the more delicate Arpa Doppia, an accurate reproduction of an Italian 16th/17th century double harp (with two rows of strings - see one on my resource pages) the tiny medieval harp, and the stunning electro-harp.
When she can borrow it from our daughter, she also plays the concert harp, with its full, strong sound.
Liz's singing, both in voice and style, gives a clue to her part Scottish ancestry. Liz both arranges music and composes her own.
Just a little of what they said:
"Thanks... for playing at my wedding and making the ceremony truly magical." -from a bride's letter.

The Binnorie CD

After several years of being asked "Can we buy your CD?" Liz and Lorna compiled a mixture of their own arrangements mainly of Scots and Irish traditional music, with some original items in traditional style.
The over design was by Jenny York - well, if you had a graphic design student in the family at the time...
And the whole thing, published by Lizard's Music, is available by post for £12.00.

The duo BINNORIE

pronounced "Binn-OR-ry"
...played during over 15-years for many weddings and functions, delighting audiences with two celtic harps, or sometimes fiddle, concertina, and voice, and delighted many audiences.
Sometimes The Husbands played too
While Binnorie is no longer taking bookings, the CD is still very much available, and very attractive. (It has quite a fan club in Brussels too!)
Liz, with her celtic harp, her voice, and her concertina, joined with Lorna Walker to form Binnorie. Lorna plays celtic harp and fiddle, and sings, and like Liz, both arranges and composes her own material.
Like Liz, she is still performing both solo and with her husband.

As to the Binnorie Sound - to hear it, you'll have to buy the CD!

A SAMPLE OF WHAT THEY SAID:

A super collection ..... slightly unusual and very endearing arrangements. Excellent harpistry, complemented by their voices, and skills on fiddle and concertina too" [Highlander Music]
